Ordinarily every condemned soul starts out as puny and insignificant, regardless if kings or serfs. Liches break the mold by becoming so well connected within the infernal hierarchy in life that when they arrive, they already have the elevated status of some greater devil's favorite puppet. Gautferoch took it a step further and transplanted all the manifestations of his earthly power to the afterlife, so that all his serfs and vassals became undead together with him. He had managed to return to life seven times already, a rare achievment even for a lich, despite having faced some of the greatest exorcists of several consecutive centuries.
